Poster: Powering IoT Sensor Nodes with Weak Light Sources

This poster introduces our recent work WISE, an innovative IoT node architecture designed to operate autonomously under weak light conditions, such as indoor lighting or low-intensity sunlight. As the scalability of IoT systems is constrained by the limitations and maintenance costs of batteries, energy harvesting has emerged as a sustainable solution. While prior research has primarily focused on outdoor environments with abundant sunlight, WISE leverages energy harvesting with a novel timing supply control mechanism that minimizes quiescent current to the nano-ampere level. Furthermore, WISE introduces a hardware component selection framework tailored to diverse design requirements and an energy-aware scheduling method to enhance system performance. Real-world evaluations demonstrate significant improvements in communication rate and energy efficiency over state-of-the-art designs.
