Loss Reduction Control of Megawatt-Level Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) has been extensively employed in high-power electric drives and renewable energy systems because of its high power density, dynamic performance, and extended longevity. Optimization of PMSG efficiency in offshore high-power generation scenarios significantly improves energy conversion effectiveness. Although current research focuses predominantly on material and structural improvements, studies on loss suppression through control algorithms remain insufficient. Traditional vector control exhibits inherent limitations in multi-objective optimization, for which model predictive control (MPC) offers a novel solution. This study constructs a PMSG model of the dq-axis that incorporates iron and copper losses, advancing both iron loss characterization methods and a minimum loss control algorithm in the MPC framework. By establishing mathematical mappings between loss components and operational parameters, a dynamic minimum-loss control strategy tailored for surface-mounted PMSG is proposed, validated through multi-scenario comparative simulations. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategy effectively reduces machine losses while maintaining dynamic response, thus improving operational efficiency.
