Development of a Novel High-Performance Viscosity Testing System Based on PMUTs Array

This work presents the development of a miniaturized ultrasonic liquid viscosity monitoring system based on piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) array. The system correlates ultrasonic attenuation coefficients with liquid viscosity by conducting extensive testing on glycerol-deionized water mixtures at varying temperatures and mass fractions. The system demonstrates an error margin within 2% when tested against additional samples, showing comparable performance to conventional viscometers. It requires only a small sample volume, making it suitable for applications like pharmaceutical research, where viscosity is critical to drug release and absorption. The system’s design, incorporating optimized transduction and detection sections, enhances sensitivity while reducing the size of the overall monitoring device. Future developments, including the integration of immersion measurement capabilities, will further improve the system’s practicality and efficiency, making it a promising tool for real-time viscosity monitoring in diverse applications.
