Performance Analysis of Multi-Phase Induction Machines Under IRFOC Control

The study of multi-phase induction machines has gained prominence due to their superior performance in fault tolerance, efficiency, and torque ripple reduction compared to conventional three-phase counterparts. In recent advancements in motor drives, configurations with more than three phases have accumulated significant attention due to their numerous advantages over traditional three-phase systems. These advantages include reduced space-harmonic content, enhanced fault tolerance by maintaining operation even in the presence of phase open faults, higher torque density, and improved overall efficiency. Despite these benefits, there remains a knowledge gap in understanding the behavior of induction motors with varying phase numbers. Therefore, this paper presents a comparative study of the dynamic modeling of synchronous multi-phase induction motors, with a particular focus on the $dq$-axis analysis using MATLAB Simulink. The study includes motors with three, six, nine, and twelve phases, exploring the distinct characteristics and behaviors in terms of their additional components due to the presence of more than three phases. By examining the behavior of these components under various conditions, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of multi-phase induction motors, offering valuable insights for both academic research and practical applications in advanced motor drive systems. Key findings highlight the influence of phase number on control performance. This analysis also provides valuable insights for optimizing the design and control strategies of advanced multi-phase induction machines for high-performance applications.
