Controller for Grid-Current Regulation and RMS Current Reduction of a Matrix-Type Converter

This work proposes a control scheme for a single-stage, three-phase isolated matrix-type ac-dc converter. The key advantage of the topology is to integrate, in a single conversion stage, functionalities including $i$) ac-dc power conversion, ii) output voltage regulation, and iii) galvanic isolation. The proposed controller exploits the several modulation variables of the converter to allow regulated sinusoidal line currents and reduced operating rms currents on components, including the bidirectional switches. Similar goals are pursued in the relevant literature, but due to the complexity of the topology modulation, solutions are typically affected by complexity in analysis and implementation. As an additional merit, the proposed control accommodates optimal references for the converter operation, which can be computed offline or by online algorithms.
