Wireless Communication Technology Requirements for V2V-Based Merging Assistance Systems on Highways

In recent years, merging assistance systems that dynamically control the speed of vehicles on highway on-ramps while sharing real-time traffic information through wireless communication technologies have garnered considerable attention. The effectiveness of these systems critically depends on the performance of the employed wireless communication technology, particularly its ability to support high-speed and long-range communication. However, wireless communication inherently involves resource contention with other applications, requiring proper spectrum allocation in accordance with national radio regulations. Therefore, it is essential to clearly define the minimum communication requirements needed to deploy such systems, on the premise that safe and automated driving is ensured. This study aims to clarify the communication requirements for wireless technologies applied in merging assistance systems. To this end, simulation evaluations are conducted on a representative highway merging scenario by varying communication parameters such as transmission intervals and communication range. This approach enables the identification of conditions required for smooth vehicle merging and the derivation of the corresponding wireless communication technology requirements.
