Securing Wireless SDN Controller from Jamming Attack

Wireless networking represents a new era in communication technology utilized globally. A wide range of services is offered by wireless communication, requiring a robust management mechanism, which is fulfilled by Software Defined Networking (SDN). This creates a new networking paradigm known as Software Defined Wireless Networking (SDWN). In an SDWN environment, the network is managed by a controller located in the control plane. Due to this central management, the controller is always susceptible to attacks. Additionally, the controller continuously communicates with devices in the data plane. If the communication from the controller is compromised, it can lead to a network failure. Recently, jamming attacks have emerged as one of the most critical threats that hinder the global adoption of SDWN. In this scientific study, we propose a controller application designed to detect and classify jamming attacks to secure the SDWN controller. The development of the application involves the extraction of nineteen flow descriptors using the Sine-Cosine Algorithm, which are then utilized by a multi-layer perceptron to build the security application for the SDWN controller. These nineteen flow descriptors have a fitness value of 0.99985. The evaluation of the proposed system is conducted using publicly available datasets, demonstrating that the application achieves a very low FAR of 0.26% and an FPR of 0.57%. The application achieves an impressive detection rate of 99.21%.
