Optimization of Dual-Layer Hemostatic Balloon with a Perfusion Channel Based on Hyperelastic Modeling and Genetic Algorithm Approach

Due to the difficulty of achieving hemostasis in deep-seated vessels without compromising tissue perfusion, a novel hemostatic balloon is proposed in this work. The balloon features a hollow central channel that maintains continuous blood flow, while a dual-layer structure ensures rapid hemorrhage control and vascular patency. The outer thin-walled, low-stiffness layer expands at low pressure to quickly stop bleeding, whereas the inner thick-walled, high-stiffness layer maintains a patent lumen. To realize this concept, a layer-by-layer fabrication method is developed to precisely define the geometry and material distribution of the bilayer structure. A mathematical model based on the MooneyRivlin hyperelastic formulation, optimized via a genetic algorithm, is used to tune material and geometric parameters for a balanced response between radial expansion and channel integrity. Finite element simulations verify that the design effectively occludes bleeding while preserving tissue perfusion. Simulation and modeling results confirm the potential of this approach for minimally invasive surgical applications.
