Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive Using an Extended Kalman Filter

Because of their exceptional efficiency, high power density, and precise control features, permanent magnet synchronous motors, or PMSMs, are widely used in high-performance and industrial applications. Nevertheless, conventional PMSM control techniques that depend on position sensors, like encoders or resolvers, raise the complexity, expense, and noise sensitivity of the system. Another option that has grown in popularity is sensorless control. This study explores the application of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for sensorless control of PMSM drives, where rotor position and speed are estimated without physical sensors using advanced observer methods and signal processing techniques. The EKF algorithm determines rotor position and speed by analyzing stator current and voltage measurements. A significant challenge in sensorless PMSM control is ensuring stability and accuracy at low speeds, where the weak back-electromotive force (EMF) may impact observability. By increasing estimation accuracy, the suggested EKF-based approach guarantees reliable performance under a variety of operating. circumstances. The results of the simulation show how well the EKF performs in reducing torque ripple, improving dynamic response, and achieving accurate rotor position estimation. According to the results, EKF-based sensorless control is a dependable and reasonably priced substitute for conventional sensor-based methods, which makes it appropriate for use in industrial and automotive settings.
