Control of Three-Phase Grid Fed-BES Based Multiple Solar Water Pumps

Key aspect of the microgrid concept is its capability to function in islanding mode. In this mode, the distributed generation system (DGS) within the microgrid must provide a stable and reliable voltage supply to maintain seamless load operation. Power converters, which act as interfaces for renewable energy sources and energy storage systems, are essential components of microgrids. This paper presents a hybrid control architecture aimed at ensuring balanced power sharing among multiple interfacing inverters feeding the multiple water pumps, residential loads while enhancing overall system efficiency. A battery integrated multiple photovoltaic (PV) array fed water pumps connected to a three-phase distribution network is utilised. Multiple PV arrays are utilized for peak power extraction with an incremental conductance (InC) maximum power point tracking (MPPT). PV arrays are connected to DC link of main voltage source converter (MVSC) through a boost converter. VSCs are connected in parallel, which expands DGS and distributes active power to grid. This DGS is managed using a current control method in grid-tied mode. However, in off-grid mode, voltage and frequency are regulated using a voltage control by MVSC at point of common coupling (PCC). Meanwhile, current control is employed for auxiliary VSC1. The grid current and grid voltage THD is always maintained below 5% during all the test conditions, as specified by IEEE-519 standards. System performance is found good for steady state and dynamics as solar insolation changes, grid outage, battery support, load unbalance and change simulated in MATLAB and authenticated in real time controller OPAL-RT(OP5707) with RT-LAB platform.
