Design and Implementation of a Dynamic Test Kit for AVR Parameter Estimation of a Synchronous Generator at Sapugaskanda Power Station

The Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is an essential device for maintaining the stability of the terminal voltage and regulating the reactive power output in synchronous generators. Standard testing of AVR systems, especially for parameter estimation purposes, is usually followed by costly and time-consuming methods. Recent research has put additional focus on dynamic testing techniques, improved field validation procedures, and model-based estimation techniques for more realistic and practical excitation system modeling and its parameter estimation purposes. But many of these schemes involve complex signal injection configurations or are only relevant to simulation centers, with the unavailability of field-deployable test solutions. This study outlines the in-house design, implementation, and field application of a new dynamic testing kit with adjustable voltage injection through center-tapped transformers, relays, and switch control making it compatible to inject real-time disturbance signal directly into the AVR system of the AC excitation system of Sapugaskanda power station, Sri Lanka. This new testing method offers an economical, customizable and field-deployable solution for parameter estimation of AVR which also holds potential for broader applications across various power plants.
