A New Alumni Engagement Platform Using Graph Database for the Department of Computer Engineering

Maintaining strong alumni engagement is a challenge due to the lack of an effective communication channel between universities and their graduates. This paper presents the development of an alumni channel platform that leverages Neo4j, a graph database, to efficiently manage relationship-driven queries and enhance connectivity within the alumni network. We compare the performance of Neo4j and PostgreSQL, demonstrating that while PostgreSQL excels in structured data operations, Neo4j significantly outperforms it in graph-specific queries, particularly in network traversals and alumni connections. Our findings highlight the advantages of graph databases in social network-style applications, enabling seamless alumni interactions, career networking, and institutional engagement.
