DC-DC Boost converter with maximum power point tracking for photovoltaic arrays

The use of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms significantly improves the performance ratio of photovoltaic (PV) systems, by optimizing the use of the energy generated by the modules. The MPPT dynamically adjusts the voltage-current ratio so that the modules always operate at their maximum power point. This reduces electrical losses by preventing the PV modules from operating outside their optimal point, maximizing energy production even in suboptimal scenarios such as partial shading, presence of defects or diffuse and varying irradiance, mitigating also the impact of mismatches between modules. The aim of this study is to build a functional set-up, both in a simulation environment in MATLAB-Simulink and in a laboratory, to deploy and validate different MPPT algorithms. Perturb & observe and Incremental Conductance MPPT algorithms will be evaluated on the developed set up in several scenarios, such as illumination changes, partial shadows or even defects on the PV module such as variations in series and shunt resistance. The set up will be used for the development and validation of new MPPT algorithm and for educational purposes.
