A Broadband L-Probe-Fed Metasurface Antenna Utilizing AMC Structure

This letter introduces an L-probe-fed microstrip antenna featuring an innovative structure with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) patches. The L-probe is made up of a vertical probe combined with an extended rectangular microstrip line. The metasurface of the proposed antenna is made up of periodic arrangement of AMC patch units, which are placed above the L-probe. The design aims at broadening the impedance bandwidth of this microstrip antenna, while improving the radiation performance. The proposed antenna demonstrates excellent performance with the measured S₁₁ below −10 dB at 5.03 GHz to 6.26 GHz, and this antenna effectively covers the corresponding WiFi bands: IEEE 802.11a, b, g, n, ac, ax, and 802.11p (with a frequency in the 5.15 GHz to 5.925 GHz range). The measured gain within the operating frequency range varies between 7.04 dBi and 9.92 dBi, with a front-to-back ratio exceeding 18.3 dB and the total efficiency greater than 81%. It exhibits directional radiation patterns.
