Monitoring Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) by Smart E-Nose: A Review

Exploring smart sensors/electronic nose (E-nose) for environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has gained increasing attention in addressing the public health concern for indoor ETS pollution. This review analyzes the species and concentration of diverse ETS composites, including characteristic markers of nicotine, and summarizes the recent progress on ETS-related sensors, E-nose and recognition algorithms are assessed. Finally, current challenging issues, including insufficient sensitivity, selectivity, and sensor drift, and the future approaches to address those issues, have been discussed. This review aims to offer a guideline for developing smart ETS sensors and E-nose to control indoor ETS pollution.
