Development of Instructional Model by Using Collaborative Learning and Role Play to Enhance Public Speaking for Rajabhat University Students in the Faculty of Education

Public speaking is an essential skill for university students, as they are required to take part in professions that require transferring of knowledge and the exchange of information with the public and students. Public speaking for university students is oral discourse intended to inform, convince, influence, or inspire a large audience in a public setting. Every pre-service teacher needs to give a speech in front of students in the morning so public speaking should be developed. Collaborative learning is of particular significance because it offers students the chance to communicate ideas, develop social skills, and increase their confidence by collaborating with others. These are all key elements of effective public speaking. At the same time, the implementation of role play is an effective way of teaching for the development of public speaking abilities. This is due to the fact that it enables students to engage in simulated scenarios that are corresponding to real-world scenarios, which in then reduces anxiety, stimulates familiarity with various speaking contexts, and develops communication skills that are suitable for a wide variety of situations. Consequently, the significance of these two methodologies is a critical requirement for the creation of an effective teaching model for students in the Faculty of Education. This research aimed to develop teaching model for public speaking using cooperative learning and role-playing to promote public speaking skills for students in the Faculty of Education, Rajabhat University. The study was conducted using cluster random sampling, which included 30 first-year university students in the Faculty of Education. All of them enrolled in the Language course as a communication discipline in the first semester 2024. Questionnaires for needs analysis, lesson plans, a REAL model, a test, and an evaluation form for public speaking had been used as research instruments. The research results found that 1. The problems regarding the teaching of public speaking were at a high level overall (Mean = 4.39, S.D. = 0.57) and the needs for teaching public speaking was at a high level (Mean = 4.45, S.D. = 0.95) 2. The instructional model using collaborative learning and role playing (REAL model) consisted of 4 steps: 1) Ready and prepare 2) Engage with scenario 3) Act out together, 4) Learn through reflection 3. Learning achievement after learning collaborative learning and role playing (REAL model) was significantly higher than before learning at the statistical level of.05. 4. The ability of public speaking of the students was at the highest level (Mean= 3.61, S.D. = 0.28).
