Enhancing Learning Outcomes in Object-Oriented Programming through Project-Based Learning Integrated with the 5E Instructional Model: A Study in a Computer Science Program

This study investigates the integration of the 5E Instructional Model into Project-Based Learning (PBL) to enhance learning outcomes in an Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) course within a Computer Science program. Forty undergraduate students at Udonthani Rajabhat University were divided into an experimental group (PBL +5 E) and a control group (traditional lecture-based instruction). A quasi-experimental design with Pre-tests and Post-tests, performance rubrics, and attitude surveys was employed. The instructional strategy for the experimental group mapped each phase of the 5E model-Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate-to PBL activities involving the development of real-world software projects. Results showed that students in the experimental group outperformed those in the control group in both post-test scores ($M=82.65$ vs. $M=73.40, p\lt .001$) and project performance. Additionally, students in the experimental group reported higher levels of motivation and satisfaction. The findings suggest that integrating the 5E model into PBL fosters deeper conceptual understanding, stronger programming skills, and greater student engagement. This approach offers a promising pedagogical framework for enhancing computer science education.
