Iron Loss Determination Methods in Induction Motors: A Review and the IEEE 112 Standard Method Verification

The precise computation of total losses in induction motors (IMs) is crucial for accurately calculating their efficiency. Among the various losses in IMs, accurately quantifying iron loss presents greater challenges than other loss mechanisms. Moreover, iron loss represents a substantial portion of IM's total losses, so it must be considered when assessing the motor's efficiency. The literature presents various approaches for calculating iron loss in IMs, varying in accuracy and levels of intrusiveness. Thus, considering the significance of computing iron loss in determining the efficiency of IMs, this article provides an overview and discussion of existing methods for determining iron loss in IMs. Additionally, iron loss estimation relations that do not depend on the IM's structure are modeled in MATLAB software, and their accuracy in iron loss estimation is investigated by comparing the estimated iron loss values with the measured values according to IEEE 112 and IEC 60034-2-1 standards for 111 simulated IMs. These IMs were simulated using datasheets from different electric motor manufacturers. This survey article offers technical recommendations for future research in this area.
