Electromagnetic Design of an Enhanced-Torque Profile Four-Phase Switched Reluctance Motor for Variable-Speed Applications

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) has attracted considerable attention among electric motor technologies due to its robust design and reliability. However, its widespread adoption is hindered by inherent torque profile issues, which compromise smooth operation and performance. This paper introduces a novel four-phase SRM with an 8/14 pole configuration, specifically engineered to reduce torque ripple and enhance average torque in variable-speed applications compared to a conventional 8/6 SRM. An analytical approach enhances the motor”s performance by lowering torque ripple and increasing the average torque. The proposed design is validated through 2D finite element method (FEM) analysis using ANSYS Maxwell, with comparative simulations demonstrating that the increased rotor pole count significantly reduces torque ripple and increase average torque while maintaining the same phase configuration.
