Design and Analysis of a Triple Active Bridge Converter for Simultaneous Charging of Two Different Ev Batteries

This paper presents the design and simulation of a Triple Active Bridge (TAB) DC-DC power converter for simultaneous charging of two electric vehicles (EV) batteries with different specifications. The design employs a Comprehensive Phase Shift (CPS) modulation scheme, leveraging all five available phase-shift ratios to control the power flow effectively in three charging modes: Mode A(80 kW), Mode B(120 kW) and Mode C(160 kW). Mode C, representing the maximum power transfer scenario, serves as the basis for selecting key design parameters, including switching frequency, leakage inductance, transformer turns ratio, core material, power device selection, and capacitor sizing. These design choices ensure minimal losses and maximize converter performance. Mode B is particularly significant due to charging of EVs with different battery specifications (80 kW and 40 kW) simultaneously. The TAB converter achieves a high efficiency of 94.3% in Mode C and 94.1% in Mode B while providing independent and scalable power transfer to two output ports, eliminating the need for two Dual Active Bridges (DABs). This significantly reduces cost and space requirements while maintaining comparable performance. The MATLAB/Simulink model validates the design across all three operating modes, demonstrating efficient power transfer, stable voltage, and current profiles.
