Combinational and Sequential Design Logic for Ternary System

In this work, an attempt has been made to design and implement combinational as well as sequential circuits by a ternary system of logic where every logic state is supported by three states, viz 0, 1, and 2 instead of the more conventional two-state system used in the binary system. This is applied to show the potential of ternary logic to form a more efficient circuit design in the aspects of size, speed, and power consumption. One innovation adopted in this work is the use of floating-gate MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors), that significantly reduces the number of transistors, compared with a conventional MOSFET-based design, typically found in most of the binary circuits. For instance, core logic gates such as NAND, NOR, OR, and NOT are implemented for both binary and ternary systems and thus compared for their respective performances. This comparison will include factors such as power consumption, speed of operation, and degree of design complexity. In ternary logic, gates have to accommodate an additional state, thereby posing new challenges toward design but also optimization opportunities, mainly circuit density and efficiency. Ternary logic does have a potential for several important benefits compared to binary logic, such as having higher data storage per unit area, circuits are much smaller in size, consumes less power, and faster in processing. Since transistors can store information in only one state, fewer transistors are required; such an implementation can be much smaller and hence reduce the overall complexity of the design to make circuits faster and with more energy efficiency. Adopting ternary logic in digital circuits is thus a feasible step towards opening up the doors for more compact and energy-efficient designs that permit a way of overcoming some of the limitations of traditional binary systems. The ternary system, compared to the binary system, provides a way of understanding how ternary logic may come in handy for future applications and developments in digital electronics, particularly where space, speed, and power consumption play a great role.
