Cost Projections for Green Hydrogen Production Using Different Electrolyser Technologies in China

Using electricity from wind power and PV power to produce green hydrogen plays an important role in decarbonising future economy. To understanding the current and future economical performance of green hydrogen is critical to better harness green hydrogen’s role in decarbonization. In this paper, the technical characteristics of main electrolyser technologies are reviewed, including alkaline (ALK) electrolyser, polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser, anion exchange membranes (AEM) electrolyser and solid oxide (SOEC) electrolyser. The economic-related information for all four electrolyser technologies and levelized cost of energy(LCOE) for wind power as well solar PV power are collected , by which the levelized cost of green hydrogen (LCOGH ) is investigated for 2024, 2030 and 2050 . Comparison with levelized cost of conventional grey hydrogen based on fossil fuel is also provided. The result can benefit future in-depth green hydrogen economic research.
