Unified Design of DC-DC Resonant Tank Circuits for High Gain Applications

Due to the increased needs of high gain, high efficiency power converters for applications such as renewable energy storage systems, telecoms and other industry applications, the design of such converters have gained importance. While there are literature regarding the individual design of the specific converter topology, a comprehensive generalized approach regarding tank circuit design is not present. The main objective of this paper is to give a general design guideline for the design of tank circuits for DC-DC resonant converters which can be used as a guidebook for converter design. The common topologies used in converters are discussed and two examples of tank circuit design are discussed which are of high current high gain designs, which are commonly used in industrial applications. The methodology for design is obtained by fixing some design parameters and optimizing key factors like peak current, gain, magnetic circuit volume, etc. The procedure and methodology of tank circuit design will be focused on deriving the equivalent circuit parameters of the converter and arriving at suitable expressions for the various parameters to be optimized.
