Hardware implementation of PDS-PWM for Five-Level Active Neutral Point Clamped Inverter using LAUNCHXL F28379D

With the advancements in the field of renewable energy sources, the development of multilevel inverter (MLI) systems has gained interest. However, the hardware implementation of MLIs come with many practical challenges. This article aims to provide insights into the practical challenges that arise while developing the hardware setup for the five-level active neutral point clamped MLI topology. Specific focus is provided on the TI LAUNCHXL-F28379D based implementation of the Phase Disposition and Shifting (PDS) PWM modulation scheme and capacitor voltage balancing algorithm for the chosen converter topology. Further effects of interfacing circuits such as signal conditioning and ADC, dead-time, DSP isolation and capacitor pre-charging have been studied experimentally. Hardware results are provided for the implementation, and detailed solutions are discussed for minimising the effects of the studied interfacing circuits.
