Design of a Solid-State Circuit Beaker (SSCB) Integrated DC Fast Charger with Flexible Power Processing Capability

In public spaces, Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers are often underutilized, as EVs are not actively charging throughout their entire parking duration. In this paper, a smart DC fast charging solution has been proposed that allows flexible power sharing among the connected EVs based on energy demand, departure schedules and customer preference. As rapid DC fault current rise is still an issue in DC bus-connected EV charging stations, an ultrafast Solid State Circuit Breaker (SSCB) has been integrated into the DC fast charger with power flow control. Incorporating SSCBs with DC-DC converters reduces component counts, system complexity, and costs, while enabling downsizing the ratings of power devices, cables and other auxiliary components. The plausibility and effectiveness of the proposed SSCB based EV charging method has been validated by simulation and an experimental prototype.
