The Design and Implementation Combining Space Vector PWM and Advanced FOC Algorithms to Improve Dynamic Control of Asynchronous Motors

The paper presents the design, simulation, and prototyping of a three-phase voltage-source inverter for industrial induction motor control, leveraging Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) to optimize harmonic performance and DC bus utilization. The system integrates sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) for torque and speed regulation, implemented on a Microchip dsPIC30F4011 Digital Signal Controller (DSC) using a C/C++-based software framework developed in the MikroC IDE. Key innovations include: (a) a hardwaresoftware co-design combining SVPWM with advanced FOC algorithms to achieve dynamic motor control; (b) Real-time experimental validation under acceleration, braking, and transient load conditions, resulting in total harmonic distortion in phase currents of less than 5% and torque response below 100 msec.; (c) robust protection mechanisms, including IGBT desaturation detection, adaptive current limiting, motor overload protection, and mechanical gearbox safeguarding during direction reversals. Experimental results confirm the system’s stability, efficiency, and reliability in industrial environments, with the SVPWM-FOC architecture reducing switching losses by 15% compared to sinusoidal PWM. The modular software design, coupled with the DSC’s peripheral integration (e.g., high-resolution PWM, fault-tolerant ADC), ensures scalability for high-power applications. This work bridges theoretical control strategies with practical implementation, offering a cost-effective, safety-certifiable solution for next-generation motor drives.
