Implications of Supercapacitor-Inductor and Core Selection in HESS incorporated with 3-Phase BLDC Drive

Input filter design is crucial for optimizing power electronic systems like DC-DC converters, PFC circuits, and DCAC converters. This paper analyzes passive and active Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) for powering a BLDC motor with pulsed load torque. The HESS, comprising a battery and supercapacitor (SC), effectively manages energy while also functioning as an input filter, eliminating the need for additional filtering. The study focuses on core selection and frequency response, providing design guidelines for efficient input filtering. A comparative evaluation of ferrite and powdered cores considers core losses, turns, cost, and weight. These insights help optimize input filter design, reducing losses and improving efficiency in BLDC drives powered by hybrid energy sources. Further simulation results demonstrate that the SC pack supplies most of the dynamic load current in different HESS configurations having different input current profiles.
