Two-Dimensional Phononic Crystals for High-Sensitivity Acceleration Sensing

This paper explores two-dimensional phononic crystals (PnCs) as a metamaterial for high-sensitivity acceleration sensing. Defective PnCs create a resonant cavity that produces sharp transmission peaks within the band gap. Acceleration causes a frequency shift in these peaks, enabling highly precise acceleration sensing. Both numerical and experimental results show that this approach is suitable for acceleration sensing, with a sensitivity of 276 Hz/g achieved during measurements. Moreover, since the sensitivity is related to the size of the PnCs, it is expected to reach the order of 10⁵ Hz/g by using the micro fabrication techniques in the future.
