Trace-to-IFC: Integrating Layer Thickness from GPR data into BIM

The integration of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data into Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows enables engineers to optimize the planning, design, and maintenance of infrastructure projects, fostering a more efficient, sustainable, and data-driven approach throughout the lifecycle of the pavement structure. This article introduces a novel Trace-to-IFC methodology for representing asphalt layer thickness using GPR data. The openBIM IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard was adopted to ensure interoperability and data exchange. The methodological workflow involves the use of Civil 3D and Revit software to create the pavement structure and IFC model, using the IfcPavement entity based on the latest version of IFC 4.3. The resulting model demonstrated interoperability by retaining both geometry and semantic information across different BIM and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) platforms. Additionally, the model proved compatible with other formats, such as Shapefile (SHP) for GIS and KML (Keyhole Markup Language) for Google Earth. This workflow has shown significant value as a decision-making tool for the maintenance and rehabilitation of road infrastructure.
