Three-Port High Step-Down Converter for More Electric Aircraft Application

This paper proposes a three-port high step-down converter topology for more electric aircraft applications. The proposed converter integrates three ports: a primary source, a secondary source (battery), and a load port to enable continuous power management between multiple energy sources with a simple circuit in the electrical power distribution system of the more electric aircraft architecture. It employs single input single output, single input dual output, and dual input single output modes. An energy storage device has been integrated into a two-stage cascaded buck converter to develop a modified cascaded buck converter with three ports. The modes of operation with the steady state analysis and dynamic modeling for each mode have been presented in this paper. The proposed converter of 600 W has been validated on a laboratory prototype for a voltage range of 270 V to 28 V with a switching frequency of 25 kHz. This work has reported its performance such as loss and efficiency analysis, sensitivity, stress, and comparative analysis. Compared to recent three-port converters, the proposed converter's superiority is evident, providing advantages such as independent power flow control, less stress, low losses, a high step-down conversion ratio, and a simple design for achieving efficient step-down conversion.
