An Innovative eDNA Sampler for Deep-Sea Ecosystem Exploration

This paper presents the development of a novel automated in situ eDNA multi-sampler specifically designed for deep-sea exploration at depths of up to 6,000 meters. The device is optimized for deployment on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), such as the VICTOR 6000 operated by the French Oceanographic Fleet. It addresses key technical challenges, including ensuring sample representativeness and reproducibility, preventing contamination, and preserving eDNA integrity throughout prolonged deep-sea dives. First, we provide a review of existing commercial eDNA samplers and their characteristics. We then detail the design of our custom-built eDNA sampler, the DSN-eDNA-S, with a focus on critical component choices (e.g., the pump system). The performance of the prototype is currently under evaluation.
