Investigating Energy Dissipation Characteristics of Vegetation Belt as a Climate Change Adaptation Measure Towards Coastal Protection

This study investigated the energy dissipation characteristics of vegetation belts under different flows, considering climate change impact. The comparative analysis in the paper involved the experimental study of different flows interacting with the vegetation belt. The oscillatory (monochromatic and bichromatic waves), translatory (solitary and elongated solitary waves), and transient flow (tsunami-like bore. The energy dissipation characteristics and the attenuation process involved differ with different flows. The flow classification based on the Froude number and flow characteristics aided in understanding the flow interaction behaviour with vegetation belts. The maximum attenuation observed for the transient flow of about 79.6 %. The oscillatory flow showed a dependency on wave height in attenuation characteristics. Maximum attenuation for oscillatory flow was observed to be 67.6 %. The translatory flow exhibited a uniform attenuation trend, and the maximum case of translatory flow was 16.5 %. The process involved in energy dissipation for different flows by the vegetation belt has been compared and discussed in this paper.
