Visual Semantics in Metaverse and Web 3.0: Integrated Learning and Communication

Visual semantic communication is gradually transforming into one of the mainstream directions for Metaverse applications. Metaverse applications generally require enough resources to handle multimedia data, which also needs visual semantics based on user needs. Combining these kinds of applications with task-oriented services greatly cuts down on the time and resources needed to extract information. However, its growth also raises concerns about energy consumption and the fundamental limits and theoretical guidance necessary for its development. This article provides an overview of the recent eco-friendly advancements in visual semantic architectures for establishing sustainability in the Metaverse and Web 3.0. These architectures use visual scenes captured from virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR)-enabled headsets and the generated semantic information to create an efficient and eco-friendly communication network. The article concludes that visual semantic architectures have the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and expand the boundaries of what is possible in this new digital realm of the Metaverse. Additionally, it highlights the challenges and opportunities for future research in this field.
