Wheat Rust Identification Using Advanced AI Techniques

Wheat, a cornerstone of global food security, faces a significant threat from fungal parasites known as rusts. These specialized villains, including leaf rust, stem rust, and yellow rust, wreak havoc on crops, causing substantial yield losses. While traditional methods of scouting for these diseases by eye work on a small scale, they become cumbersome, time-consuming, and prone to errors when applied to vast fields. Thus, we need advanced systems for rapid and accurate disease identification. Our research delves into the realm of deep learning, we utilize Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), specifically models like VGG16 and Xception, achieving up to 90% accuracy on a dataset from Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture after 100 training cycles. Key to this success is rigorous hyperparameter tuning, improving detection precision.
