Chipless RFID Tag Detection Using Short-Time Matrix Pencil Method

This paper presents chipless RFID tag detection using the natural frequency of the complex natural resonance (CNR). The CNRs, which are often called poles, are extracted by using the short-time matrix pencil method. The performance of the proposed detection technique was evaluated through simulations. Simulations were divided into three main cases, namely different tag IDs, different tag positioning, and different distances between tag and antennas. In simulations, the ultra- wideband tapered slot antennas were used as transmitting and receiving antennas, and their effects were mitigated by using antenna calibration. Simulation results show that detection system can employ the natural frequency to identify the tag ID efficiently, and also reveal that horizontal movement of the tag exerts no discernible impact on the process of identifying the chipless RFID tag ID. Also, simulation results demonstrate that altering the depth distance of the tag has no discernible effect on the process of identifying the ID of the chipless RFID tag.
