Development of Height-Dependent Emissivity Correction Functions for Automotive Paints Using Asphalt References in Infrared Thermography

This paper presents a method for correcting emissivity-related errors in infrared thermography of automotive paints by using asphalt as a reference surface. Eight coated panels and adjacent asphalt were imaged at ten heights. Polynomial correction functions were derived from temperature ratios between each panel and the asphalt. The resulting height-dependent models allow for more accurate surface temperature readings without manual emissivity adjustment. This approach enhances thermal measurement consistency across different paint types and is suitable for real-world applications in automotive diagnostics and inspection.
