Design and Thermal Analysis of WPT System with LCC-LCC Compensation Network Based on Real-World 50kW Charging Profiles

This work presents the design and analysis of a 50 kW wireless power transfer (WPT) system, which employs DDQ-DDQ 3-phase coils and LCC-LCC compensation network optimized for real-life electric vehicle (EV) battery charging profile. The primary objective is to analyze the WPT system thermally during the constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) phases. The analysis helps identify the thermal hotspots on magnetic couplers during very fast charging. MATLAB/Simulink models are utilized for derivation of compensation parameters according to battery. Thermal behavior was investigated using ANSYS Maxwell and ICEPAK to evaluate WPT system response. Results show that during CC mode, higher current densities cause ohmic and eddy current heating in the coils, whereas in the CV mode reduced load current leads to lower coil temperature but increased stress on capacitive components due to voltage buildup. Core loss estimations using the Steinmitz model quantify the temperature-dependent behavior of cores across the charging cycle. The results highlight thermal limitations in CC vs CV operation and offer insight into thermal design and real-time compensation tuning in 50 kW WPT systems.
