A Descriptive Bibliometric Analysis and Review of ChatGPT in Programming Education

This study provides a bibliometric analysis of ChatGPT in programming education and examined 538 publications indexed in 2023 to 2024. Results revealed a rapid growth in ChatGPT research particularly within computer science, engineering, and social sciences. The major themes were mostly focused on student perceptions, programming support, AI tutoring, ethics, and tool evaluation. The study identified the USA as a leading contributor and maps key research clusters such as AI-driven development, educational approaches, and intelligent tutoring systems. In addition, IEEE and ACM emerged as the leading publishers in this field. Implications include the need for more collaborative research related to programming education. Recommendations are discussed.
