Gyre-scale current measurements using reciprocal acoustic transmission

Experiments conducted at steadily increasing ranges to explore the feasibility of using reciprocal acoustic transmissions to measure currents in the midocean are discussed. The relevant theory is given, followed by a description of the experiment. Acoustically derived tidal currents and subinertial currents are compared with independent measurements. The circulation around a triangle in the North Pacific approximately 1000 km on a side is computed, but no direct measurements are available for comparison.<
