Proposal for an EEG-Integrated Tool for Supporting Cognitive Assessment Practices

Cognitive decline is a growing concern, especially in aging populations, where early detection and continuous monitoring are crucial for effective interventions. Traditional cognitive assessments, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), are limited by subjectivity and the lack of real-time data. This study presents the development of a proposal for an (electroencephalography) EEG-integrated tool designed to enhance cognitive assessment practices by providing objective, real-time insights into cognitive states and brain activity. The system employs the EMOTIV EPOC X headset to capture EEG signals and extract key cognitive metrics such as engagement, attention, stress, interest and band power on specific band waves. These metrics are streamed by using the Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) protocol, processed in python and visualized through an interactive interface, enabling healthcare professionals to track fluctuations in cognitive function dynamically. The results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating EEG technology with traditional assessments, highlighting its potential to support early cognitive decline detection and the future of this proposal can include clinical validation and refinement of signal processing techniques to enhance accuracy and usability.
