Leveraging Technology for Better Commutes: UTAUT Insights from Google Maps’ Commute Feature

In recent years, navigation applications have become essential tools for urban commuters. This study explores further on the factors influencing the adoption of Google Maps’ commute feature among users in the Greater Jakarta region using a framework derived from the UTAUT theory, encompassing core variables such as user performance expectations, ease of use, peer influence, and facilitating conditions. The study examines how these factors shape commuter intentions and behaviors towards adopting digital navigation tools in a densely populated region with heavy traffic. The adoption contribution factor is based on two key equations, which are the t-statistic greater than three or p-value below zero point zero five. Gathered survey data reveal that expectations of performance and operational simplicity serve as key motivators for adopting the commute feature since these factors improve the efficiency and convenience of daily travel. Facilitating conditions also turn out to be a major factor to the adoption rate as it enables access to resources and user knowledge significantly increasing the rate of adoption. Social influence resulted in no impact on the adoption rate of the Google Maps commute feature, which indicates that individual utility and perceived practicality are more influential than social recommendations and judgments. This study offers region-specific understanding of technology acceptance in urban commuting scenarios and high-traffic urban areas where optimized navigation tools can reduce commuting challenges and provide smoother travel experience for urban environments worldwide.
