Three-Dimensional Parametric Surface Modeling of the Mandible Based on CT Images and Finite Element Analysis

This study presents a three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) of the mandible based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) parametric surfaces. The mandible’s CT image data were preprocessed using Mimics software, and precise contour information was extracted with Geomagic. A highly realistic 3D model of the mandible was then constructed using the NURBS parametric surface method, accurately capturing the complex geometric and anatomical features of the mandible. The finalized 3D model was imported into ANSYS for finite element analysis, where appropriate material properties, boundary conditions, and loading scenarios were defined to simulate the mechanical responses of the mandible under typical physiological activities. The analysis revealed the distribution of stress and strain throughout the mandible, with noticeable stress concentrations observed in the condylar neck, the posterior region of the coronoid process, and the mandibular angle. The results demonstrate that the NURBS-based modeling approach offers significant advantages in faithfully reconstructing the mandible’s morphology. The corresponding finite element analysis provides a reliable theoretical foundation and technical support for the diagnosis of mandibular disorders, treatment planning, and biomechanical performance evaluation. This research not only contributes to the advancement of mandibular biomechanics but also expands the potential applications of NURBS parametric surfaces in biomedical engineering.
