A Novel High Step-Down DC–DC Converter With Low Ripple for Electrolyzer Applications

Electrolyzers are crucial for renewable energy-based hydrogen production, and their performance is closely linked to the characteristics of dc–dc converters. This article proposes a novel high step-down dc–dc converter with low ripple, specifically designed for electrolyzer applications. The converter effectively addresses key challenges, such as achieving a high step-down voltage ratio while minimizing output current ripple, without the use of active switches to reduce ripple. The converter’s performance was validated through both simulation studies and real-time experimental testing on the open platform for application-level real-time simulation (OPAL-RT) platform, where it was integrated with an electrolyzer load for hydrogen production, demonstrating its effectiveness in practical applications.
