Investigation of a Coordinated Fault Ride-Through Strategy at the Receiving End of a Wind Power VSC-HVDC System with Embedded Submodule Energy Storage

Rapid absorption of temporary power surplus in VSC-HVDC systems and stabilization of DC voltage are effective approaches to enable fault ride-through (FRT) at the receiving end. To this end, this paper proposes a coordinated FRT strategy for the receiving end of a VSC-HVDC system based on submodule energy storage. Compared with conventional DC-side energy storage topologies, the submodule-based energy storage structure offers advantages such as high modularity and flexible capacity configuration. By integrating a hierarchically triggered hybrid scheme of energy storage and dissipation devices, the proposed strategy effectively mitigates the risk of DC overvoltage collapse. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can suppress transient DC overvoltage within 1.2 p.u. during faults, reduce system recovery time by more than 60%, and decrease submodule capacitor energy absorption by over 50%, significantly enhancing the system’s FRT capability under transient power surplus scenarios.
