Real-Time Simulation Method Based on Voltage Controlled Current Source for Power Electronic Converters With Low Resource Consumption

For the high accuracy R_ON/R_OFF model, multiplications need to be performed by field programmable gate array multiplier DSP48 slices, which limits the model scale for power electronic converters (PECs). Although the existing zero-multiplier method substitutes multiplications with shift addition operations (SAOs), the large number of SAOs not only inflates the computational complexity but also substantially increases the modeling workload. This article proposes a novel zero-multiplier method for real-time simulation of PECs based on the voltage controlled current source (VCCS) model. In order to guarantee the same high modeling accuracy as the R_ON/R_OFF model, the equivalent conditions between the VCCS model and the R_ON/R_OFF model are derived by analyzing the characteristics of switch currents. Besides, by applying the switch voltage equation of the R_ON/R_OFF model to the VCCS model, the number of SAOs is significantly reduced. Moreover, the proposed method effectively circumvents the iterative operations that are inherent in traditional VCCS model-based methods. Finally, a three-phase inverter and a dual-active bridge converter are simulated in real-time. The simulation time steps can be as low as 20 ns. The most used resource is lookup tables (LUTs), but only consumes a little of the total resources. Compared with the existing zero-multiplier method, the proposed method demonstrates remarkable advantages in terms of reducing both the number of SAOs and the resource consumption of LUTs.
