A Graph-Based Analysis of Collaboration, Trends, and Ethical Dynamics: Perspectives on Ecuadorian Academic Research

Understanding the dynamics of academic research is essential to foster collaboration, identify emerging fields, and shape science policy. This study examines the academic landscape in Ecuador by analyzing data extracted from Scopus, covering entities such as authors, articles, keywords, and Ecuadorian affiliations. Using graph theory as the methodological foundation, we primarily model the co-authorship network and assess its behavior. By employing graph metrics and strategies such as node degree, edge weight, visualization, and community detection, we uncover collaboration patterns within Ecuador's academic environment. Additionally, the study evaluates the density and modularity of co-authorship networks, revealing the extent of collaboration and interdisciplinary engagement within the scientific community. A supplementary focus is placed on detecting irregularities in collaboration dynamics, aiming to subtly explore the potential presence of unethical behavior or “publish and perish” practices among specific research groups. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Ecuador's academic ecosystem, highlighting the role of network analysis in driving data-informed decision-making. By identifying gaps and opportunities in collaboration and research focus, this study lays the groundwork for initiatives to enhance scientific productivity and impact. The proposed methodology and conclusions are broadly applicable, providing a replicable framework for analyzing academic networks across diverse national contexts, regional settings, and disciplinary groups.
