Reflections of Fitness—Investigating User Acceptance of Smart Fitness Mirrors Based on UTAUT2

Driven by the growing demand for home-based exercise alternatives and further fuelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, smart fitness mirrors have rapidly emerged as a prominent solution in the fitness industry. While their technological and experiential features have been extensively explored, research on user acceptance—particularly the role of perceived interactivity—remains limited. This study extends the UTAUT2 model by integrating the construct of perceived interactivity and employs a mixed-methods approach combining PLS-SEM and fsQCA, based on 621 valid survey responses. The results reveal that habit, social influence, performance expectancy, and perceived interactivity are key determinants of behavioral intention, while effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, price value, and facilitating conditions were not significant among digitally fluent, higher-income users. Perceived interactivity not only directly influences behavioral intention but also significantly enhances performance expectancy and effort expectancy. Furthermore, fsQCA analysis identifies multiple causal configurations, confirming the central role of perceived interactivity in driving continued use. This study contributes to theory by refining the UTAUT2 model with an experiential dimension and demonstrates practical implications for designing interactive fitness technologies that foster user engagement, routine formation, and social reinforcement.
