Design and Modeling of DC-Link Voltage Control in Modular Multilevel Converters

Balancing the individual capacitor voltages of a MMC in the presence of grid fluctuations is a complex task. A comparison and analysis of two control approaches is presented, with particular attention to their steady-state and dynamic behavior as measured by event-driven simulations. These approaches are adapted and modeled for STATCOM applications.
