Performance Evaluation and Comparison for Fault Tolerant Control of Dual Three-Phase PMSM Under Open-Phase Fault

Dual three phase permanent magnet synchronous machines (DT-PMSMs) have shown excellent fault tolerance capability, which can ensure smooth transition from healthy control to postfault control and still operate safely and reliably with guaranteed performance and efficiency under fault. The fault tolerance is achieved with the fault tolerant control (FTC) strategies and in the literature various FTCs are developed for DT-PMSMs, where the design constraints, objectives, and methods are varying aimed for different types of rotors and applications. Hence, this article presents a comprehensive performance evaluation and comparison of recently developed FTC strategies under different conditions and the considered performance includes torque, phase current RMS value, total loss, torque to loss ratio/efficiency, and maximum attainable torque. This paper will summarize the general FTC design laws, compare the performance and outline the future research direction for both surface-mounted and interior machines. The results can help to guide the design and optimization of FTCs to further improve the control performance and direct the selection of FTCs according to the specific needs of the practical applications.
