Analysing the performance of coaxial square and circular coils for effective wireless power transfer

The global shift towards sustainable non-polluting transportation and reducing carbon emissions has put electric vehicles (EVs) on the front-line. The challenges thus arise in reducing the drive range anxiety due to limitations in battery capacities, long charging times, and the lack of charging infrastructure. Dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) addresses these problems by enabling vehicles to be charged while in motion, reducing range anxiety and eliminating the need for charging stops. The DWPT technology is based on inductive power transfer, where there are roadbed transmitter coils and a receiver coil fit in the vehicle to receive power. The efficiency of DWPT depends on the coil parameters like mutual inductance, quality factor, distance between the coils and operating frequency. This paper compares the performance of coaxial circular and square coils by analyzing their power transfer capabilities using mathematical modeling and MATLAB simulations. The mutual inductance of the coils has been modeled and the power transfer against various coil parameters has been plotted.
